An emergency lamp for your car, boat, cellar or survival kit: In these cases, you need a lamp that combines power and reliability. Forget crank lamps or solar panel lamps because they have a battery that, if not recharged every 3 or 4 months, eventually no longer hold the charge. The only solution in our opinion is a lamp with lithium batteries and batteries stored out of the lamp and never used. Why choose energy, otherwise not ecological?
First (in a simplified way) you should know that once you have put a battery (s) in a lamp and you have lit it the batteries wear out even if you do not use it, the chemical reaction is activated and will continue, eventually emptying the battery of its energy. So it is better to get a bright LED flashlight, as these don’t drain the battery quite as fast.
Then we prefer lithium batteries because they have a much longer storage life than Alkaline or Saline or rechargeable batteries. With Lithium, you have an average of 10 years of storage (against a few months to a few years for other technologies). Of course look at the expiry date BEFORE you buy the batteries.
Lithium batteries are also of interest, they discharge current even by negative temperature (up to minus 20 ) whereas other technologies see their performance drop drastically below 10.
Which model ? There is no “ideal” model to speak of. In an emergency or warning situation, a stroboscope function (fast flashing) can be useful but you can still do it manually. Lithium batteries exist in several formats so you can choose according to your need. Examples? in a small emergency lamp on a backpack or attached to a jacket zip an Inova Microlight. To have more powerful a simple and reliable model like the Maglite Solitaire LED or MiniMaglite LED, the Fenix LD02, E20 or LD22. If it is for the boat you will need more power if you want to look for a beacon or other, then a Fenix PD35 or TK16 or a Streamlight ProTac HL will do the job.
A hiking lamp
Small random with a risk of return at nightfall or lamp put in the backpack for safety: the Fenix LD11. Small and light (53g), waterproof and very powerful for its size it has a great autonomy (70h) which ensures a safe return. Its powerful lighting will help you in case of a bad encounter or observe the light. Consider bringing a new battery in its packaging to make sure you have the right energy at the right time.
